SEQ: Presenter walking along a path near
maidstone.
|
COMM: Finding your way to the Smile can be
hard, well that's because you probably wont find it on a map, its
not a country park, though it is made up of a few of them, and
its not a particularly small area either.

SEQ: describing the medway smile, graphics and

boundaries.
|
COMM: The Medway smile is squeezed between the
towns of Aylesford, Snodland, Halling and Cuxton to the west, the
Medway conurbation to the north, and the Maidstone area to the

|
COMM: The Medway smile is a part of what's
known as “the living landscapes project”, instead of
singular, protected sites, the project aims to protect larger,
more complete biospheres-
SYNC:-here in the smile, its all about the
river.

SYNC:
This mixture of river valleys, floodland and
marshes provide a unique biosphere, with some of the best
examples of British riverside life available country-wide, a
Green Gem in the middle of this south-eastern megalopolis. Today
I'm walking along a section of the Medway Valley walk, Starting
here, at the edge of Maidstone.

works/clay pits/quarries.etc(2nd leg)(one day)
|
COMM: other than the natural wonders of this
area, the Medway river valley is still an industrial place, the
sewerage works is an example of somewhat damaging industry, along
with the old pits and chalk quarries you wouldn't be wrong to say
that this place has felt the hand of humanity, the good news is
that nature is reclaiming the Old, Dirty industrial areas here,
making way for this:-

|
SYNC: -This is perhaps an example of positive
industry, no smoke, no pollution, just clean electricity. Then
again, some would say it blights the landscape as much as old
industry. I think I'd prefer this over the Poo plant any day.

SYNC: PTC: Well, it seems like its getting
late, I had hoped to get as far as Rochester, this path goes all
that way you know?, thankfully I can just about see the HS1
viaduct in the distance. (comment about experience of the walk
here) I'm just so amazed all this was hidden! Its too bad I cant
see much more of the smile, this whole area is littered with
hidden footpaths and bridleways. There's so much more too see
here.
